Comment on People of Mixed Black and White Ethnic Heritage Identity by Samantha Pierre-Joseph /people-of-mixed-black-and-white-ethnic-heritage-identity/#comment-415 Tue, 25 Jul 2023 15:31:26 +0000 /?p=30932#comment-415 Posted on behalf Rachel Hollamby

Saying ‘mixed race’ I’ve always felt uncomfortable with this, both words..

And I really think, can’t we just be simpler and fairer and plainer speaking…

We say someone is black, we say someone is white, these are big general vague terms…

Can’t we also say someone is black-white

Or asian-white
Or asian-black
Or asian-black-white
Or whatever that individual person is.
Going in alphabetical order so there is no suggested preference.

If they have more and that does get a mouthful after 3, then then then, that person might for ease prefer to say group heritage (or mixed heritage / mixed ethnicity / mixed).

I imagine only for police purposes would there be a need to describe someone as an umbrella term ‘mixed race’, as they can’t stop a suspect whilst chasing them to ask what ethnicity they are…
So can’t we just have ‘dual or group ethnicity’ for them – shortened to their IC6 or whatever it is…

I really think this is it guys, I’ve cracked it…, let’s set it in motion x x x x x x

A very genuine article, highlighting how our histories shape our personalities. It’s great to hear your honest inner voice which is very powerful. Inspiring. Well done.

Comment on People of Mixed Black and White Ethnic Heritage Identity by Iona /people-of-mixed-black-and-white-ethnic-heritage-identity/#comment-222 Sun, 18 Sep 2022 14:35:37 +0000 /?p=30932#comment-222 Very interesting article- thanks for uploading. I’m a mixed-race individual (half white, half black). I don’t deem the term “mixed-race” as offensive. In fact, it’s befitting for a person whose ancestry comprises of two or more races/ethnicities; “Mixed-race” summarises this. I’m not exclusively black; I’m not exclusively white. I’m both simultaneously and honour both races equally.

Nowadays, I think the issue we’re facing is over-political correctness. “Mixed-race”, as a term, is not offensive in comparison to a term like “half-caste”. It cannot be denied that the latter is not politically correct, is obsolete, and carries its own negative connotations.

Whilst I sympathise with this article’s perspective, I urge its writer to consider that, for many, the term “Mixed-race” is used as self-description and not deemed offensive. Also, I don’t agree that a specialised term should be used for mixed-race people of white and black descent. “Mixed-race”, though it is an umbrella term, is highly associated with people of white and black descent already. Therefore, a specialised term isn’t essentially needed.

Hi Katie,

Thank you for your message it maybe an idea to check out bamestreams website to see how you can register for the bereavement therapy. Alternatively you can also take a look on BAATN’s psychological directory which you can access here: /find-a-psych-therapist/#!directory/ord=rnd.

I hope this helps
